During a press conference yesterday Ryanair announced their plans to expand the number of routes to and from South of Sweden. Starting on 23 November this year, Ryanair will begin services to Madrid from Malmö-Sturup Airport at the rate of 3 a week.

Ahead of the General Election on 17 September, Ryanair promised to expand services on the Swedish market if the proposed aviation tax was not introduced. This promise was fulfilled with the introduction of services to the Spanish city of Barcelona and Girona Airport.

Ryanair’s Head of Northern Europe, Wilhelm Hamilton says:
- We are extremely pleased to be able to offer these new destinations from Gothenburg and Malmö and hope to continue with our promised expansion plans in Sweden.

Even FlyMe will be introducing international service before the summer with the destinations Nice, Alicante and Bologna.
“We are following our plan for continued expansion. As Sweden’s low-price airline, we can now also offer the Stockholm region and southern Sweden inexpensive trips to Europe,” says Mats Jacobsson. “We also expect to attract Danes to our flights from Sturup.
Malmö-Sturup Airport has invested in the future by rebuilding the terminal. By opening up the terminal and removing the walls separating the domestic and international area the airport capacity has increased to cope with the growing number of passengers. It has been estimated that by the year 2010 the number of passengers will have doubled compared with today. This new terminal is designed to cope with between 3 ½ to 4 million passengers per year.
